BCAA Supplement Info and Reviews

What is a BCAA?

BCAA stands for branched chain amino acids.  In particular, the term BCAA is referring to the essential amino acids valine, leucine, and isoleucine.  Whenever you hear about amino acids, you will usually hear the terms “essential” and “non-essential” at the same time.  An essential amino acid is one that your body can’t make by itself.  These amino acids have to come from an external source, in other words from what you eat.  A non-essential amino acid is one that your body can produce.

A branched chain amino acid (BCAA) is especially important to athletes and gym-goers because they are actually metabolized in the muscles instead of the liver.  BCAA supplements are most commonly used for their proposed anticatabolic and anabolic effects.  In other words they promote muscle growth and help your body to not break down muscle as much.  You can tell if an amino acid is in the form of a BCAA by the “L-“ in front of the full amino acid’s name.  The most common BCAAs found in supplements are L-Valine, L-Leucine, and L-Isoleucine.
