What are Antioxidants?

An antioxidant supplement is a great way to protect your body against the harmful effects of free radicals.  A free radical is basically a molecule that is missing an electron, and so it attacks cells in the body in the attempt to steal an electron to balance itself out.  Free radicals cause damage to cells, known as Oxidative Stress, by entering a cell and taking an electron from other molecules within the cell.  An antioxidant is a molecule that has an extra electron that I can give to a free radical, thereby stopping it from causing damage to other cells in the body.

Unfortunately, our current environment makes all of us prone to free radicals and the damage they cause.  The sun, pollution, x-rays, saturated fats, cigarette smoke, and many other common things in our environment can cause free radicals.  Exercise also causes free radicals because of the stress it puts on the body.  This makes supplementing with an antioxidant supplement essential to living a healthy life. 

What are some natural sources of Antioxidants?

Many vitamins and minerals act as antioxidants, or at least aid your body to produce them naturally.  Some of these vitamins and minerals are:

  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamins B2, B3, and B6
  • Beta-carotene
  • Selenium
  • Zinc
  • Copper

There are others, along with several herbs such as Ginko Biloba that have the same effect.
