You Gotta Get the Protein

If you’re going to gain muscle, and even if you’re going to lose weight….in fact, just to be healthy you need to make sure that you’re getting enough protein in your diet.  Then the question always comes up of “What type of protein is best for me?”  Great question!  Rather than going through all the details in this post, here is a protein supplement guide that you might want to check out if you have this question.

As a side note, you might have these questions on other supplements as well.  Here’s another article you might want to check out about the top 7 bodybuilding supplements.  This site gives some pretty good info on many different supplements.

Another question that comes up a lot about protein is, “What is the best way to get protein?  Should I get it through supplements or can I just eat enough regular food?”  Well, this is a difficult question to answer, because there are so many things you need to consider for yourself.  While there are a lot of high protein foods out there, it is very difficult for most of us to get in enough meals to make that a plausible idea.  That’s where supplements come in.   Just keep in mind that supplements are meant to be supplements!  They aren’t there to replace eating regular foods entirely, but to help you reach your goals by giving you what you might not be able to get from regular foods.

Yes protein is very important and there are many sources. I believe that most people are very low in protein intake and are taking in far too many carbs.

I have found in the past that a lot of bad eating will not affect me as long as I am eating the right foods as well and keeping my muscle level high by doing a lot of weight training.

I understand what you’re saying, but you should really aim to get the majority of protein out of whole foods rather than supplements. I have around 2 shakes on a workout day, and 1 on a non-workout day. One in the morning upon waking, and one post workout with some simple carbs.

The rest of my protein comes from milk, eggs, chicken, beef etc.

Thank you for the great information on protein diet. I have heard a lot that high protein diet will cause liver and kidney damages. Would you mind to tell us how can we prevent this from happenning?

    Thank you,
    Tom

I don’t think the average American has a problem getting enough protein. I think it’s rare to see protein malnutrition in this country. Now, getting enough protein for body building is a different story. I think you must supplement in order to reach a high level of muscle mass. Thanks for the post!

it’s importent not to concume too much protein. Only 30% of your calories should come from proteins.

  6. June 25th, 2008 | 4:18 pm

I’m just getting a bit more into muscle building, after several half-attempts in the past. My problem is that I’m naturally quite skinny and find it difficult to put on a lot of weight. I can easily out-eat most of my friends who are 2 or 3 stones heavier than me, so that isn’t the problem. Thanks for this post, I think I’m going to have to try giving supplements a go to see if I can build more muscle mass.

For building muscle, your body needs clean fats, lean meats, and whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. When you’re cutting or just maintaining the muscle, the body needs less carbs and more lean protein and clean fats. Simple as that.

I like this article, it’s nice information
for health. Protein can also be used to gain weight and the best way to get it is through the combination of both supplements and eating regular food.

My favorite ways of getting enough protein are firstly yoghurt, which is so easy to prepare, just have them with blueberries. My other favorite is protein powder, and you can even mix this into the yoghurt - quite delicious! Whey powder is good, as is pea powder (both complete proteins).

I agreem protein is a very useful thing however other people think that steroids and protein is the same thing. My girlfriend has stolen my whey protein and threw it away .

Getting your protein through natural aliments is always best but let’s face it it’s not always possible nor convenient.

  14. December 7th, 2008 | 2:56 pm

I prefer using muscle milk protein. I however stay away from the premade drinks. My friend got sick from them.

  15. December 8th, 2008 | 4:02 pm

i try to eat a lot of protein in my diet.
a good serving of chicken, fish, tuna,
or lean, lean turkey or ground beef is usually good for me.
protein a lot of times comes with a lot of fat,
and that is where it is not good,
but with lean meat, you can’t go wrong.
    good post.

One error that almost everybody in gyms has already commited is to relate protein quantity with muscles, without realizing how these concepts are related.

For instance, there are people that ingere daily more than 200 grams of protein. If we consider that a normal bodybuilder can metabolize not more than 150 g daily, the excedent will surely be transformed to fat.

Other error is to consume protein only once or twice a day. Protein should be ingested several times a day, to avoid peaks and depressions in protein level.

protein is key! great post : D

  19. January 7th, 2009 | 9:48 pm

thanks man, your information usefull for me

  20. January 13th, 2009 | 5:18 pm

You definitely need protein. Thats usually the favorite part of my diet anyways.

  21. January 19th, 2009 | 9:50 pm

My favorite way to get protein to snacks and breakfast is with yogurt. Yogurt is rich in probiotics and also is low GI, and has recently been shown to help with fat loss (in combination with exercise). I like the pot set yogurts that have more probiotics and taste a lot better as well. And low GI foods (such as protein rich foods) have been shown to cause less oxidation, including for the skin and collagen, which means younger looking skin and less signs of skin aging as well.

Really if you are going to work out hard whether for muscle or cardio benefits you need the protein. It allows even a long distance runner who wants to remain thin the ability to repair their muscles.

  23. February 6th, 2009 | 3:09 am

You need about a gram of protein per lb of lean body weight for buidling muscle.

  24. February 9th, 2009 | 5:10 pm

Last fall, I went through a 12 week program to get fit and loose weight. An increase in protein was one of the many changes I made to my diet. I felt quite a bit better as a result. I recommend the use of protein and protein supplements when trying to loose weight or eat smart!- Nate

Great post and thanks for the sharing..

I agreed with comment that should not consume too much protein. We should focus on more fiber and vegetables rather than protein.

We also need to choice vegetable protein rather than animal protein. Animal protein is high in sulfur-containing amino acids which is bad to our health.

  27. March 2nd, 2009 | 7:28 am

Protein is truly an essential part of our growth and development. It repairs our body’s worn out cells and tissues and make new ones. It also plays a major part in pregnancy. It helped me a lot on my diet program. Protein keeps our body going. Some are privileged enough to consume a lot of protein in their daily diets but for those who are deprived for some reasons, their bodily functions are really affected. But we should also be reminded that consuming large amounts of protein sources such as meat might lead to a high cholesterol level and may also affect our kidneys. The recommended servings vary among age groups so it would be best to consult your physician about it. There are thousands of protein sources out there that makes it easy access. Thanks and more power!

  28. March 3rd, 2009 | 3:02 pm

Protein supplementation should only be used only after whole foods…i.e. as a supplement.

    I’ve learned this once I’ve gone IF+Paleo.

  29. March 19th, 2009 | 3:18 pm

Thanks awfully, I am learning a lot from your blog.

  31. March 28th, 2009 | 11:17 pm

This is really very important for all those who even want to lose weight. many people feel that proteins are for people who want to build their body and not for people who want to lose weight. But intake of proteins will help people to build muscle mass and will in turn reduce the fat because it converts the fat to muscle mass

  32. March 28th, 2009 | 11:18 pm

important information for all especially when so many people across the globe are getting health conscious

  33. April 6th, 2009 | 11:54 am

Food supplements are usually abused by a lot of people thinking it is a replacement of the real food that they intake. Your post about it enlightens them about this.

  34. May 2nd, 2009 | 2:53 am

Remember all protein is not created equal. There are different types to take at different times of the day. Such as straight Casein or milk protein should be taken at night since it is carb free and slow digesting. While you only want a fast digesting whey protein powder after your workout.

  35. May 8th, 2009 | 6:39 pm

I don’t think a lot of people realize that they are not getting enough protein. If you are losing weight and not getting enough protein, you might become a skinny fat person.

  50. October 13th, 2009 | 9:34 am

I respectfully disagree with homeowners insurance I think most people eat enough fish and other foods that are high in protein that they actually have enough protein in their diet.

i agree that protein is a very important part of building muscle but people should also try to work out how much they actually need for their body size so that they arent getting too much. a good muscle diet goes a long way when trying to put on muscle
