You Gotta Get the Protein

If you’re going to gain muscle, and even if you’re going to lose weight….in fact, just to be healthy you need to make sure that you’re getting enough protein in your diet.  Then the question always comes up of “What type of protein is best for me?”  Great question!  Rather than going through all the details in this post, here is a protein supplement guide that you might want to check out if you have this question.

As a side note, you might have these questions on other supplements as well.  Here’s another article you might want to check out about the top 7 bodybuilding supplements.  This site gives some pretty good info on many different supplements.

Another question that comes up a lot about protein is, “What is the best way to get protein?  Should I get it through supplements or can I just eat enough regular food?”  Well, this is a difficult question to answer, because there are so many things you need to consider for yourself.  While there are a lot of high protein foods out there, it is very difficult for most of us to get in enough meals to make that a plausible idea.  That’s where supplements come in.   Just keep in mind that supplements are meant to be supplements!  They aren’t there to replace eating regular foods entirely, but to help you reach your goals by giving you what you might not be able to get from regular foods.

Yes protein is very important and there are many sources. I believe that most people are very low in protein intake and are taking in far too many carbs.

I have found in the past that a lot of bad eating will not affect me as long as I am eating the right foods as well and keeping my muscle level high by doing a lot of weight training.

  2. April 20th, 2008 | 2:17 am

I understand what you’re saying, but you should really aim to get the majority of protein out of whole foods rather than supplements. I have around 2 shakes on a workout day, and 1 on a non-workout day. One in the morning upon waking, and one post workout with some simple carbs.

The rest of my protein comes from milk, eggs, chicken, beef etc.

Thank you for the great information on protein diet. I have heard a lot that high protein diet will cause liver and kidney damages. Would you mind to tell us how can we prevent this from happenning?

    Thank you,

I don’t think the average American has a problem getting enough protein. I think it’s rare to see protein malnutrition in this country. Now, getting enough protein for body building is a different story. I think you must supplement in order to reach a high level of muscle mass. Thanks for the post!

  5. June 23rd, 2008 | 3:03 am

it’s importent not to concume too much protein. Only 30% of your calories should come from proteins.

  6. June 25th, 2008 | 4:18 pm

I’m just getting a bit more into muscle building, after several half-attempts in the past. My problem is that I’m naturally quite skinny and find it difficult to put on a lot of weight. I can easily out-eat most of my friends who are 2 or 3 stones heavier than me, so that isn’t the problem. Thanks for this post, I think I’m going to have to try giving supplements a go to see if I can build more muscle mass.

For building muscle, your body needs clean fats, lean meats, and whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. When you’re cutting or just maintaining the muscle, the body needs less carbs and more lean protein and clean fats. Simple as that.

  9. September 18th, 2008 | 7:31 am

I like this article, it’s nice information
for health. Protein can also be used to gain weight and the best way to get it is through the combination of both supplements and eating regular food.

My favorite ways of getting enough protein are firstly yoghurt, which is so easy to prepare, just have them with blueberries. My other favorite is protein powder, and you can even mix this into the yoghurt - quite delicious! Whey powder is good, as is pea powder (both complete proteins).

  12. October 9th, 2008 | 2:55 pm

I agreem protein is a very useful thing however other people think that steroids and protein is the same thing. My girlfriend has stolen my whey protein and threw it away .

Getting your protein through natural aliments is always best but let’s face it it’s not always possible nor convenient.

i try to eat a lot of protein in my diet.
a good serving of chicken, fish, tuna,
or lean, lean turkey or ground beef is usually good for me.
protein a lot of times comes with a lot of fat,
and that is where it is not good,
but with lean meat, you can’t go wrong.
    good post.

One error that almost everybody in gyms has already commited is to relate protein quantity with muscles, without realizing how these concepts are related.

For instance, there are people that ingere daily more than 200 grams of protein. If we consider that a normal bodybuilder can metabolize not more than 150 g daily, the excedent will surely be transformed to fat.

Other error is to consume protein only once or twice a day. Protein should be ingested several times a day, to avoid peaks and depressions in protein level.

protein is key! great post : D

  19. January 7th, 2009 | 9:48 pm

thanks man, your information usefull for me

  20. January 13th, 2009 | 5:18 pm

You definitely need protein. Thats usually the favorite part of my diet anyways.

  21. January 19th, 2009 | 9:50 pm

My favorite way to get protein to snacks and breakfast is with yogurt. Yogurt is rich in probiotics and also is low GI, and has recently been shown to help with fat loss (in combination with exercise). I like the pot set yogurts that have more probiotics and taste a lot better as well. And low GI foods (such as protein rich foods) have been shown to cause less oxidation, including for the skin and collagen, which means younger looking skin and less signs of skin aging as well.

  22. February 2nd, 2009 | 3:32 pm

Really if you are going to work out hard whether for muscle or cardio benefits you need the protein. It allows even a long distance runner who wants to remain thin the ability to repair their muscles.

  23. February 6th, 2009 | 3:09 am

You need about a gram of protein per lb of lean body weight for buidling muscle.

  24. February 9th, 2009 | 5:10 pm

Last fall, I went through a 12 week program to get fit and loose weight. An increase in protein was one of the many changes I made to my diet. I felt quite a bit better as a result. I recommend the use of protein and protein supplements when trying to loose weight or eat smart!- Nate

I agreed with comment that should not consume too much protein. We should focus on more fiber and vegetables rather than protein.

We also need to choice vegetable protein rather than animal protein. Animal protein is high in sulfur-containing amino acids which is bad to our health.

  27. March 2nd, 2009 | 7:28 am

Protein is truly an essential part of our growth and development. It repairs our body’s worn out cells and tissues and make new ones. It also plays a major part in pregnancy. It helped me a lot on my diet program. Protein keeps our body going. Some are privileged enough to consume a lot of protein in their daily diets but for those who are deprived for some reasons, their bodily functions are really affected. But we should also be reminded that consuming large amounts of protein sources such as meat might lead to a high cholesterol level and may also affect our kidneys. The recommended servings vary among age groups so it would be best to consult your physician about it. There are thousands of protein sources out there that makes it easy access. Thanks and more power!

  28. March 3rd, 2009 | 3:02 pm

Protein supplementation should only be used only after whole foods…i.e. as a supplement.

    I’ve learned this once I’ve gone IF+Paleo.

This is really very important for all those who even want to lose weight. many people feel that proteins are for people who want to build their body and not for people who want to lose weight. But intake of proteins will help people to build muscle mass and will in turn reduce the fat because it converts the fat to muscle mass

  33. April 6th, 2009 | 11:54 am

Food supplements are usually abused by a lot of people thinking it is a replacement of the real food that they intake. Your post about it enlightens them about this.

  34. May 2nd, 2009 | 2:53 am

Remember all protein is not created equal. There are different types to take at different times of the day. Such as straight Casein or milk protein should be taken at night since it is carb free and slow digesting. While you only want a fast digesting whey protein powder after your workout.

  35. May 8th, 2009 | 6:39 pm

I’m a personal trainer and i agree protein is an important fcator in a good msucle gain diet however so are the other main food groups such as carbohydrates, fats and water intake even. Without the correct levels of each of these groups muscle gain with be harder still.

The main expertise i have is in the muscle gain dieting that people go through. Make sure you are eating at least 5/6 meals a day to keep your body in the anabolic (tissue building) stage, obviously with the right food groups but from what you have listed your on the right track. The other main thing is to keep a food diary and make sure your caloric intake is much higher than expenditure, to ensure weight gain.

  89. September 19th, 2010 | 2:14 am

Thank for the article, even though I prefer natural sourses of protein, supplements are acceptable as long as they are not harmful for your health.

  90. October 4th, 2010 | 5:36 am

This is an interesting subject, as many people often debate (when talking about building muscle mass) about whether protein is overrated or do we really need an excessive amount, along with the natural foods vs. supplements issue. I think more attention should go towards the quality of the protein we ingest and the timing in which it is consumed and/or spread out throughout the day.

  91. October 15th, 2010 | 8:45 am

Protein is so important to grow muscles. I have a couple of friends who struggled with muscle development when they first switched over to a vegetarian diet. If you are going to cut out animal proteins, just remember that it is very important to make sure you get plenty of protein from another source, such as lentils or tofu. Your muscles really do crave the proteins!

  92. October 18th, 2010 | 2:28 am

This is a very useful technique. thanks for blogging about it .

  93. October 29th, 2010 | 8:57 am

you are right about protein. I also tried this for a few month and noticed I felt better with more energy and I eat all the time, like 6 or 7 times a day. If I have cake, I won’t mix protein with carbs and drink plenty of water.

Indeed the process of learning doesn’t ends only by reading any materials that can help but it must be done and apply what you’ve learn from it. Your intellect capability being measured by the application you’ve made and not by by knowledge alone with out proving it.

Protein is a very important part of the diet. This is particularly true if you are exercising daily. Too many people cut protein back drastically in their diet in an effort to be healthy. Instead of cutting it out, just make sure you are getting lean proteins. You will feel much more energetic.

Protein is essential - for men at least. I would just eat nice lean proteins if I was just trying to drop the pounds but maintain muscle mass but if my goal was body mass I would add some protein supplements for that extra edge. Great article by the way and kudos for keeping it real!

constant intake throughout the day is needed for maximum benefits, also different protein sources have different bio availability so some are better at certain times of the day than others, whey for example is ideal pre and post workout as it is released quickest into the body when its needed the most, casein (protein found in cheese) is good morning and night as it has a slower release, so this will ensure constant supply of protein during sleep and start of the day.

I agree protein is the most essential for building muscle. While I was doing p90x I at about 1g of protein for every pound for body weight. I noticed the more protein I ate the better my exercise was.

Well protein is helpful for body building but at the same time one should check with the Trainer how much they require. I have seen people just eating it for the sake of it and bulking up which is just wrong.

When there are problems with female health, women often ignore bacterial vaginosis symptoms or pass them off as simply poor vaginal hygiene. The problem is that many bacterial vaginosis symptoms are also similar to that of STDs, such as gonorrhea and chlamydia, so it is important for ladies to see their family planning doctor regularly to check up on any symptoms which could give clues to this infection.

You can eat enough regular food. However, post workout in a depleted state your muscles are in need of protein and carbs and this is the time to get that protein quickly. A post workout protein shake is quickly assimilated and better than solid food at this point as the solid food must be digested. as a personal trainer I require all my clients do a post workout protein shake.

I am not a fan of supplements; I think a good diet will yield the desired effects within natural boundaries. Eating foods that are high in protein should do the thing. You can choose your snacks to be high in protein too. For example if you buy caviar, one tin will be enough for a nice snack between meals, and caviar is known to contain high levels of nutrients, protein and essential fatty acids. You can also order it from the internet (from www.1caviar.com for example) if your local supermarket doesn’t have real caviar on offer (beware of the substitutes, which are not real fish eggs!)
