What is ‘Natural’ Bodybuilding?

There is a lot of talk out there these days about what does it really mean to be a ‘natural’ bodybuilder or even building muscle in the most ‘natural’ way. So what does it really mean to be ‘natural’?

The most basic definition would be to be without steroids. In other words you don’t use any enhancing ‘drugs’ to help you to build your physique. Some have taken it a step further to include most of the supplements on the market like pro-hormones, NOx, and other enhancement supplements. Most would consider basic supplements like creatine and protein to be ok, but I’ve even seem some people say that in order to be truly ‘natural’ you should only eat whole foods and that’s it.

For the most part, if you want to be considered in the ‘natural’ category, stick with the basics like creatine and whey protein and some other basic supplements that are normally found in your diet in smaller quantities. Building a natural body has many benefits. First of all, if you build your body in a natural fashion it will bring with it a sense of pride to know that you didn’t cut any corners, you built a great body from scratch. You also won’t be dependent on any drugs or crazy supplements to maintain what you have.

Is there anything wrong with not going natural? Well, that’s up to you. Everyone has to look at their own personal values on this one and decide what they think would be best for them.

I’ve always considered natural to be free of steroids, pro hormones and andro’s.

Creatine and whey are natural staples form real food stuffs.

The term “natural” has undergone multiple revisions in the last few years. New and high tech supplements have blurred the distinction between legal supplementation and steroids. The addition of various pro-hormonal stacks and related supplements to the bodybuilder’s arsenal has caused many to conclude that natural bodybuilding no longer exists.

It appears the term “natural” is subjective.

I agree with some of the comments…

Pro hormones and other supplements have really blurred the line between supplements and steroids but to stay away completely from supplements like whey protein is just silly.

Creatine and whey protein are a staple in my cupboard and without them I’d have trouble building muscle and recovering from my workouts.

I put on about 10 pounds after 2 weeks of creatine. Granted most of that was water weight but it doesn’t change the fact that I’m 10 pounds heavier and all my muscles look fuller.

With creatine and whey protein you can make a lot of natural progress but you’ll never look like the freaks winning bodybuilding competitions.

^ You’re 100% right. Creatine and Whey can take you a long way when used properly.

Natural bodybuilding is and always will be subjective, but I believe creatine to be OK since it is naturally occurring within your body.

I guess prohormones have blurred the line; but no one has proven prohormones ever worked.

    Hello,
I personally am into natural bodybuilding. I’m not a big fan of supplements. In fact right now I only take Spirulina and Wheatgrass powder.
I believe that if you eat well-balanced and nutritious meals, you will not need any supplements.
As for taking drugs to build muscle, I don’t see the point.
    Thanks for this entry.

People need to decide whether they want to go natural or not. People should not be judged on which route they choose to take.

Agree with No Nonsense, I also do not understand what is the reason to take drugs to build muscles, but I’m personally interested in male enhancement and experiment with different enhancement pills. I’m just curious why there are no such supplements included in those pills?

I think it’s also a good idea to go natural because you don’t know about side effects that haven’t been discovered yet.

Natural is the best route to go, unless your goal is to be a bodybuilding freak of freakish size. And hey, if that’s what your after and got the money, then go load up on steroids, growth hormones and tons of supplements. Personally, if I can’t get the body i want naturally, then I don’t want it. Holla! :P
