Weekly Nutrition Tip - Why Choose Oats

This week’s tip is about using oats to help get some extra calories at breakfast. This tip is especially geared towards those of you that are in a bulking phase.

Why Choose Oats
by Dr. John Berardi

If you’re looking to gain mass and have a good carbohydrate tolerance, place a bowl of fiber-rich, low-GI rolled oats along with ½ scoop of vanilla protein powder, frozen mixed berries, pineapple and a small quantity of mixed nuts right next to your omelet. This is a muscle building breakfast that’s hard to beat.

However, if you tend to hold a lot of body fat, just stick with protein, good fats, and veggies for breakfast. Save the non-fruit and veggie carbs till after exercise only - yes, even oatmeal.

This tip is provided by Dr. John Berardi of Precision Nutrition.

Thank you for the information on oats for breakfast. I’m always looking for something filling that will give me the energy I need for the day. I’m not really into the protein diets so this is always a challenge. There are just so many sugary and fattening breakfast foods that make the choice difficult as well. I have tried eating fruit and yogurt for breakfast but I’m always hungry way before lunchtime.

    Wafer Thin Girl,
I agree that way too many breakfast foods have way too much sugar. I’ve also tried the ‘fruit and yogurt’ breakfast but it never quite does it for me either!

I have some rolled oats and eat them several times per week for breakfast, but I think that I do tend to hold on to body fat, so I am going to stick to the eggs and smoothies for breakfast. I’ll probably bring the oats with me to work for lunch, though. It’s an easy meal. I can just bring a packet and add water.

Interesting tip, but should there really be pineapple in it? Way to much empty carbs…

I’ve found this to be true for me. When I found out how healthy oatmeal is for you I jumped on board. But put on the pounds, went back to the first type of breakfast and was fine. However, the rest of my family eats oatmeal every day with getting all the health benefits and none of the lbs.

When I was a canoe guide many years ago we’d always start the day with rolled oats. The kids would canoe all morning without getting hungry. Try some oats with nutmeg or cinnamon on top.
