Weekly Nutrition Tip - The Organic Debate
The Organic Debate
by Dr. John Berardi
The average person should consume two pieces of fruit and three servings of vegetables per day as a minimum. Athletes probably need even more - I recommend 10-15 servings per day for each of my athletes. Expert often spend too much time arguing about organic vs. regular fruits and veggies. I agree that raw, organic fruits and vegetables are best since they have a higher micronutrient count, but any fruits and veggies are better than none! Get sufficient fruits and vegetables in your diet before worrying about whether they’re organic or not. Once you’ve done that, worry on.

Going for a purely organic diet was never a problem for me because I know that I could eat anything in moderation. Keeping a balance among the food groups is key. However, I didn’t know that 2 servings of fruit and 3 for veggies was the minimum daily requirement. Thank you so much for the tip.
website copywriter,
We’re glad the tip was helpful for you. Good job on being strong enough to always eat in moderation. That’s commendable in today’s society of always going for the super-size!
you don’t think organic matters? i know you still get a lot of the same benefits, but don’t you think if you go all organic you’ll be a lot healthier?

i think the bigger issue is not how much healthier organic products are for you in relation to nutrients, but how bad the chemicals they use in the growing process are bad for your body. not only can these pesticides get into your system by ingesting organic veggies and food items, but just by wearing non organic cotton or sleeping on non organic bedding and mattresses can have the same effect of seeping into your skin and causing problems.
I changed my diet last year and started eating lots of fruit and vegetables. I started seeing a difference rather fast, but then I went to mainly organic and the results went through the roof. Grocery shopping can be a headache sometimes with minimal spots to shop, but if you do some research you can usually find a great place somewhat near you. My major problem was keeping everything good in my apartment once I bought everything. I had to purchase another refrigerator just to keep my fruits and vegetables good because I tend to buy a lot at one time. Now my apartment is very crowded, but it’s worth the results.
If you’re worried about pesticides and you don’t want to buy organic, then you should peel apples. And avoid strawberries, these are the most contaminated.
There should be no debate about. Organic food is best for your body and it also taste better. Just compare store-bought tomatoes to home-grown tomatoes that you grow in your garden or backyard, for example. There is no debate, unless you just really get off on nutrient deficient, chemical-laced, poor tasting produce. Organic meat is better, also, unless you like chemicals, anti-biotics, and growth hormones in your meat - along with whatever else they inject it with nowadays. Organic is the way to go, if and when possible.
