Nutrition Tip - Omega 3 Snacks

Omega 3s are an important part in everyone’s diet. Here are some ideas from Dr. John Berardi on how to get more Omega 3s in your diet.

Omega 3 Snacks
by Dr. John Berardi

Once you’re splitting up your fats correctly (about 1/3 of your fat intake coming from each of the three types of fat), your next goal should be to balance out your omega 6: omega 3 ratio. Do this and you’re arteries will be jumping for joy and they’ll have less body fat around them to impede their jump height.

While most of you probably already know that the omega 6: omega 3 balance is critical, I’m sure many of you are wondering in you can balance out the 6:3 ratio without having to pour another tablespoon of flaxseed oil down the gullet?

How about trying some pumpkin seeds or flaxseeds? Pumpkin seeds provide a 2:1 ratio of omega 6 fatty acids to omega 3 fatty acids, increasing the EFA content of your diet while putting your fat intake back in balance. Also, adding flaxseeds to your diet is a good idea. Grind these seeds up in a coffee grinder and add to your meals. Flaxseeds provide fiber, protein, and a 3:1 ratio of omega 3: omega 6 fatty acids. Your arteries will thank you.

NEVER FEAR, A NEW BENEFICIAL OMEGA-3 and OMEGA-6 ARE HERE

You’ve learned that increasing your Omega-3 intake is crucial to maintaining good health and taking fish oil supplements has been the recommended way to increase circulating Omega-3s in the blood stream.

Question: If you discovered that fish oil omega-3s were poorly formulated scientifically, would you ask if there were a better solution? You then discover that fish oil also needs converted to be used by the body, just like flax oil omega-3. But behold, a direct use omega-3 product is available.

If you could get the same benefits in 2 capsules for every 5 fish oil capsules, would you? Are you looking for a FISH FREE solution that can legitimately challenge the superiority of fish oil for omega-3s? Would that be worth something to you?

Now there is a better way.

An Optimized Omega3 natural formulation made from microalgae oil to replace the need for fish oil. Our technology provides a sustainable, scalable solution without any harm to the environment, possibly even leaving a negative footprint for carbon credits.

As President and Chief Scientist of SOURCE-OMEGA, LLC, as a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology, as a Nutritional Research Biochemist, and as an Educator, I care about the global environment. I love its beauty traveling around the world. I see the need to change things through innovation.

I recently claimed findings that a new potent microalgae oil extract matches your body’s direct metabolic needs for ratio and dose of omega-3, with metabolically much better ratios than fish oil. Plus unlike fish oil, our microalgae oil extract naturally contains phytosterols, vitamins K and D, and beneficial C22 Omega-6 DPA, also found abundant in eggs and breast milk. So it is ideal for brain health care too.

I claim we have naturally improved upon fish oil by going to the omega-3 source, microalgae, the ultimate origin of where the fish oil omega-3s came from in the first place through the food chain. Pure One™, our first breakthrough product is better formulated to treat dementia and Alzheimer’s by preventing it. Soon the Phase III clinical trials of microalgae oil omega-3 therapy for early and moderate dementia and Alzheimer’s treatment will be completed in an NIH funded study. The results are expected, as significant approval allowed quick passage through phase II trials.

this is interesting because I always thought that fish oil was the best choice all around of course there is always more in the big picture when you look into it, but I think having a balance of different sources of healthy fats is always the best choice if we want to maintain health and a good figure…… carmen

I am not one to jump on the hottest new trend or panic every time a news report tells us that what was good is bad and what we thought was bad is good, but I can say that when I was eating alot of fish especially salmon that I felt better and my skin was better too, so now I make a point of getting some kind of healthy oils in my diet every day. I am not sure about hot foods if it damages the oils in cooking so maybe it is important to get the raw oils as well.

Here is a wonderful nutrition tip. It’s great for adults but it’s also great for kids. Cut up and freeze fresh fruit… peaches, strawberries, blueberries, grapes. They are all so delicious when they are frozen. It’s like eating pieces of a popsicle. Kids will get excited about it because of that. And if you are on a diet, it is also fun… at least for me, it is!

  36. August 12th, 2008 | 6:34 pm

Nice article and good to read in the comments that most of the audience is aware of the benefits of essential fatty acids. Omega-3 is not only good to combat cardiovascular diseases but it’s also good for brain functionality and cancer prevention.

  40. August 19th, 2008 | 6:17 pm

There are always different stories about Omega3. It is unbelievable that they are so controversial. who can we trust at then end of the day?

  41. August 21st, 2008 | 12:28 pm

Tip 1: Make sure your oil has balanced EPA and DHA.

Studies that prove the amazing Omega 3 benefits are based on fish oils with a natural balance of all 8 Omega 3 family members. Some marketers may try to fool you into thinking you can get the same benefits with Omega 3 flaxseed, evening primrose or borage oils. But none of these contain EPA or DHA or all the other Omega 3s found in fish.

  42. August 22nd, 2008 | 2:00 am

Very informative, many will benefit from this..

  43. August 24th, 2008 | 3:26 pm

Some “superfood” omega 3 products include flax seed, walnuts and of course oily fish. The important thing to remember is that omega 3′form an essential part of the food chain starting with the soil used to grow the crops. Organic products are best, and foods are better than supplements.

Believe it or not, if you want to have a tasty flax seed snack and your OK with peanut butter, then put some flax seeds on the top of a lightly peanut buttered piece of toast for an interesting snack.

  55. September 20th, 2008 | 4:43 am

I find flaxseeds a great way to have a tasty intake of omega 3 fatty acids, but get the ground seeds not just the whole seeds, as these are much better absorbed. I have them as a part of a nut shake. This is soy milk, soaked almonds, and a banana, with the flax seeds, blended.

  56. September 25th, 2008 | 1:33 am

Hi, I just want to know is, the use of supplements good or Not. Should I take them with exercise, but I do not want to become a wrestler. Please reply me.

  58. October 1st, 2008 | 4:38 am

Thanks for a useful post. It is of little use if you take Omega 3 and 6, but in the wrong ratio. Not many folks are aware of this and the supplements are not always balanced as they should be. Great tips here for getting our intake right.

  71. November 16th, 2008 | 9:19 pm

I never thought of getting omega 3 from pumpkin seeds. That’s a lot easier to remember than a pill. I am going to keep them in my desk for now on

  72. November 17th, 2008 | 10:55 pm

My Alternative MD has me taking Cod Liver Oil instead of flaxseed, because it has more benefits. You have to purchase a quality brand that has high level of EPAs and DHAs, and no trace of mercury.

I use Carlson Lemon Flavored Cod Live Oil caps. She says it’s the best available. You can buy online, but it’s not cheap!

  73. November 18th, 2008 | 2:49 pm

nice review, thanks for sharing ;)

  74. November 19th, 2008 | 9:21 am

Thanks for your article. It is great to know that we have so many choices when it comes to our health. And we all have the ability to make the choice that is best for us. One thing to keep in mind however when choosing an Omega 3 supplement is the EPA to DHA ratio. A high EPA amount can lead to thinning of the blood or upset stomach. I try to always read the labels and found one that has very high DHA levels while still maintaining low EPA.

  75. November 19th, 2008 | 10:28 am

Omega products great that too this post help me lot my friend , thanks for such a nice review my friend

  92. January 9th, 2009 | 1:26 am

This omega 3 stuff is overrated .. just eat normal food and you’ll be okay

  93. January 10th, 2009 | 6:54 am

Omega 3 is not overrated, it is extremely important for your body. And it only get from sea food.

  94. January 16th, 2009 | 10:42 pm

Dr. Berardi is the real deal. I am glad to see you using information from him. Omega 3 fats are essential to our bodies.

  95. January 17th, 2009 | 10:02 pm

@Kareen, sorry you feel that way but you are quite mistaken about the benefits of Omega 3s. Click on my name and you will see a list of foods you get Omega 3s from its not just fish. Omega 3s are part of a group called essential fatty acids. Meaning your body requires them to make hormones that are beneficial to your body. You can do a search on the mayo clinics website for it and it lists the different benefits of Omega 3s.

  96. January 18th, 2009 | 5:13 am

good information and also good thing. thank you.

  97. January 19th, 2009 | 9:31 pm

Another reason to use flax seeds instead of eating omega 3 rich fish is that there are recent reports that there’s more mercury in tuna than in salmon for example. I still love the fish though, but getting omega 3’s as flax seeds is a great idea, and convenient too.

  98. January 22nd, 2009 | 4:38 pm

This has been helpful regarding Omega 6 and 3. I especially enjoy the tip about grinding up the flaxseed or else it will go right through the digestive tract with no benefits. I appreciate the tips.

  99. January 22nd, 2009 | 5:27 pm

Flax seed, Hemp seed all the way

  100. January 24th, 2009 | 1:44 am

  101. January 26th, 2009 | 12:56 pm

getting the right balance of omega oils in cod liver il is essential one is bad and one is good.

  102. January 30th, 2009 | 1:56 am

Omega3 is something i dont have; and many are telling me to get one. but of course - i meant the pills or capsules. i rather take an omega 3 from other sources … i am just afraid of medicines. what do you think?

There are several supplements I take to boost my Omega-3, but one of the most important is fish oil. It’s important to take it in pill form along with fish daily, because heat, sunlight and oxygen will destroy the nutritional value in most other forms of omega-3. At a minimum I take three 1000 mg a day, with meals.

One of my favorite sources of omega 3 lately is chia seeds. They’re delicious, full of fiber, and expand in liquids — they remind me a lot of tapioca pudding when put in some almond milk with stevia.

I have no idea why I get so confused between Omega 3s and Omega 6s. I think I need to get myself a little index card and just write it out in 2 columns… Ok, Omega 3 = … Omega 6 = …

Maybe if I make it more visual, I’ll start paying more attention and start getting the right balance. Thanks for this info Dan!

Omega 3 can be found in most northern sea fish, just is not advisable to eat more than 1-2 times a week because of their large content of heavy metals (like mercury etc)
