Nutrition Tip - Increasing Water Intake
This tip goes along with the last one that we posted. People seem to always be wondering how much they need to drink, so here are some suggestions from Dr. John Berardi of Precision Nutrition:
Increasing Water Intake
by Dr. John Berardi
Sedentary individuals should drink at least 2L or about 8 cups of water per day, athletes should drink at least 3L or about 12 cups of water per day, and athletes in hot weather climates drink at least 4L or about 16 cups of water per day.
Since following these recommendations can prevent dehydration and can actually assist with fat loss, you’d have to be a desiccated fool to ignore them. However, try as they might, some individuals find it difficult to ingest up to a gallon of water per day. So try out these three proven strategies for increasing water ingestion:
- Drink cold water - cold water is more palatable, improving ‘mouth feel’ and ingestion
- Add lemon - lemon increases urge to drink and also kills bacteria
- Chuggables - always carry some sort of jug of water around to ensure you’re drinking. Rubbermaid makes a nice blue top container (Chuggables) that we recommend to our clients.

I have heard that drinking water at room temp was best for you, is there a large difference of opionion here?
Not only do you need water to rehydrate you need plenty of water to flush out the ash from all the burnt fat if you are dieting.
Take it from my mistakes, In collage, I was playing baseball out in the hot sun and I ignored my body’s thirst. Instead of drinking some sort of fluids I went on and past out later that inning. I was treated at the hospital for Dehydration. Nothing serious happened but none of it would have happened if I had just drank a little H2O.
Replacing my soda intake with water alone has really helped me a lot.
this is excellent advice, especially for someone isnt drinking much water currently
I’m the kind of person that drinks way more soda than I do water. I may drink water once a week. Most of the time I’m drinking Mountain Dew or Dr. Pepper.
I feel tired a lot as I mentioned before cause i dont drink enough water.
Great advice. Very useful information for me.
I think water intake is also important for skin quality… skin can clear right up if you start drinking more CLEAN water. Also, if you have a probelm with dryness (especially on the lips), drinking lots of water will definitely help. It did for me atleast.
I saw something about this on FIT-tv a while ago. Also you can tell that you are drinking enough water if you urine is clear, if not, drink more water.
Kidney would be perfect by having more water.
Nice post
Thank you for the tips
I had some problems because I didn’t drink enough water. But now that problems past and drinking 2 L of water now it is easy for me. But also give me another problems..
I thank Dr. John Berardi for sharing such valuable tips.
Gr8 site
yes I noticed that my skin was clearer when my water intake is up.
I do a lot of training and drink about 4 1/2 liters a day (even on days i dont train) - i feel much better since i do that - after reading this post, i now know it doesnt only feel good, it is good
Drinking enough water has probably been the most underestimated thing out there. I put the importance of the increased water intake on the same level as nutrition, training and rest. It helps muscle growth and eliminating free radicals and toxins from the body.
And BTW if your urine is clear you drink too much water. It is supposed to be a very pale yellow.Dark yellow or orange means you should drink more.
I always heard it was better to drink room temperature water when you are working out for some reason, although I prefer drinking cold water. However, either way you need a lot if you are under intense training!
Thanks Dr John Berardi for the info. I’ve always heard it reiterated that fluid is good for the body system.
I notice a big difference in how I feel when I drink more water. I don’t think you have to have exactly what they recommend, just drink however much makes you feel good.
good tips, thanks
I grabbed my first nalgene a few weeks ago and it’s amazing how much better I feel having a “chuggable” with me at all times. I’m hydrated and I think it’s helping my skin out too.
thanks.
I’d like to add that the more water you drink, the more improtant the quality becomes. City water has chlorine, fluoride and other chemicals in it. They say it’s safe, but drinking 10 glasses of that every day may catch up with us in 20 years. They’re finding many bottled water is not much better. I recommend looking into something like the Berkey Water Filters. It’s not just about quantity.
fantastic information.. people need to remember do things realistically for their lifestylel.. like fat loss shocker.
Its better to think about what works for you and then do the right fat loss diet etc. try to make it work with the foods you like to eat, how much time you can exercise etc…
Drinking plenty of water has health benefits that reach far beyond weight loss. This was a great article. Thanks
