Limited Time? Use the Big Three
Well, take it for what it’s worth, but my opinion is you should focus most of your time at the gym one the Big 3 Lifts. Just a reminder, the Big 3 are the Squat, Deadlift, and Bench Press. These are the three best compound lifts that will help to build mass.
Another thing I’d like to mention is that if you’re in a situation where you have very little time to workout, and can only make it to the gym once a week, don’t waste the rest of the week. How long does it really take to drop to the floor and do some pushups or situps? You can find plenty of excuses not to get any exercise, or you could find plenty of ways to at least get a little bit of exercise.
You take your pick of what you want to do, but I think it comes down to self discipline and making yourself do some things that you don’t really want to do. If you have time to watch TV, you have time to do some pushups. If giving up TV is too hard for you, do some pushups during the commercials! If you really want to achieve lifetime fitness, you’re going to have to make some changes!

I’m not a big fitness buff, but my good buddy is. The other day we took a trip over to Philly. We check into the hotel and I drop down on one of the beds, tired from the trip, and flick the tv on. My buddy drops all his stuff in the corner, pops off his dress clothes, walks over to the wall and goes in to a handstand to do upside-down pushups. I was shocked. That just shows that no matter how busy you are, you can find time for fitness. 5-10 minutes later he was done and hopped in the shower.
Thanks for the motivation. Sometimes it’s just fun to be lazy but you are completely accurate - there is always time to workout.
I run a lot, and when I don’t have a lot of time I maximize my run but running hills. I don’t know if this is the best solution but it feels good.
Also, I’ve found moving my t.v. into the room where my weights are to be a good way to manage time. I usually end up lifting some weights while I watch quality shows. In the end I don’t feel guilty about watching t.v.
Being a single mom, it’s hard to find that extra time. I try to do some exercising while I’m doing household chores. Try vacuuming with a little extra vigor or calf raises as you’re doing the dishes. Picking up after little ones is a great way to squeeze in the ’squats’.. Pun intended
weight loss diva,
I like your creative ideas! It just goes to show that you can always find a way to get something in, no matter how busy you are!
I think everyone training programs should revolve around these. I always squat, press, deadlift and powerclean- there is no better method to train. There is so much misleading information out there its ridiculous. People who really understand sports science know squatting 3x a week and eating like an animal is the best mass builder- period.
I’ve actually just finished writing an article called “why-programs-Don’t-Work!” it covers this subject widely and ovoids “fancy gimmicks”
And who thinks squatting is unsafe, read a little. A full range of motion squat is the best thing for knees.
