Before, I use to take creatine. I used it for more than a year and I immediately saw and felt the effects, especially during the first months as my body really bulked up. But the only negative effect I experienced is that my body became dependent on creatine and I must continually take it to maintain my size and workout intensity. Bur now, I just take whey because it feels more natural.

I agree with you that time will tell if creatine is safe. Personally, I have never taken creatine as I don't want my body to become dependent on it. I believe that if you need a substance to obtain a desired effect, then you will never be able to stop using that substance. If you do, the desired effect will disappear.

Creatine is an excellent supplement if you are looking for that pumped up look. Although some people claim about that water retention effects, I haven't personally seen any of that.

In my experience, I have used it on and off in cycled of about a month on, a month off for the best effect. Staying on for too long seems to nullify the results after awhile.

I've researched Creatine, and found no reports of serious side effects association with the supplement. Creatine is produced by the body and it exists naturally in different foods. That should be a first indication of its safety.

The greatest concern is that the body's natural creatine production would shut down since its demand would not be needed after long periods of Creatine use. This has never happened in 45+ years of the supplements use. You are more likely to get a horrible disease or get fat from McDonalds than to discover, decades from now, that Creatine was bad for you.

I don't know what it is about the supplement that has caused so much confusion regarding its safety, effectiveness, and usage. If people want the straight goods on the product, they need only to read some peer reviewed journals on pubmed.gov. Don't rely on magazine articles or people only quoting from other publications!

People note that creatine gives them a pump. It adds size, power, speed and recovery to what they already have, but when they get off it, they lose in all these areas. 'Proper' use of creatine is not so that you pump up in a couple weeks from just taking the supplement alone. What you should be doing is using creatine then pushing yourself much harder at the gym. Those results -- the creation of new muscle tissue -- won't be going anywhere when you decide to stop taking creatine.

Creatine is one of the safer body building enhancements out there. As long as you speak with your doctor before you start taking any creatine or other types of 'natural' supplements or enhancements.

I had taken creatine for a while, but then I read some articles that it can be really bad for you. So I dropped it from my regular exercise program and went back to taking whey protein instead.

Creatine has not been extensively researched. I've read articles in the newspaper before that creatine actually improves memory. The only known danger is overconsumption and lack of water consumption. You MUST dilute the creatine heavily, or it will destroy your kidneys.

Absolutely it's safe. It's produced naturally in the body, by taking it you are only increasing your natural levels. I never felt any site effects, except it can make your muscle feel soft from all the extra water.

Creatine works. The only side effects are muscle gain.

I've heard that a million times and it's true to an extent that most normal people will benefit from creatine, in fact it has the nick name "the one that works", but one side effect I've noticed which can be easily negated is dehydration.

Creatine uses water to volumize cells, the water has to come from somewhere and if you don't have enough it may "dry" you out.

As long as you drink an extra 6 glasses a day on creatine, you'll have no problems.

Creatine is one of the most well studied sports supplements ever. The bodybuilding and sport supplement industry has a (deserved) shady reputation because very few of the products in this industry have been proven to be safe or effective. However, creatine does not fall into that category.

Time and time again, studies have shown creatine to be safe and effective. Still, you should take precautions and take it properly. Cycle on and off of creatine regularly, do not take it constantly. And be sure to drink plenty of fluids, you'll need them anyway if you are working out and ingesting lots of protein.

Still, if you are the conservative type, steer away from creatine and other supplements. The body is a delicate balance of thousands of different compounds, chemicals, and nutrients, and how any one individual's body reacts to a change in that balance is not 100 percent predictable. This is true of not only supplements, but even foods and medicines (even asprin or ibuprofin!) that have been around forever.

As an M.D. and fitness enthusiast, I've cycled creatine without any ill effects over a period of months. What I find more of a problem is the under-reported risks of liquid high-protein meal replacements. The toll they take on the kidneys can be pretty rough. One has to measure the benefits of supplements with the cost of stressing the internal organs that have to process these elements in your bloodstream over long periods of time. Natural food sources are still your safest bet.

My bf took creatine for some time. He had a LOT of gas with it. It was either me or the creatine.... besides, IMO, training and supplementing in a natural way is by far the safest. Yup, he did see increased bulk so yeah it did work, but who knows what effect it has in the long run?

I am just gonna play it safe and not take things into my body that aren't natural like that. I will stick with getting my nutrients the natural way, with a wide selection of foods that cover all the groups and essentials for living.

Even form all the comments here, the only side effect seems to be dehydration, but one should remember that if you ate two loaves of bread and didn't drink more water, you'd dehydrate too - Same principle - Drink more.

I thought that body creates also creatine. I read recently an article about different suppliments, and in that study the information stated that creatine should be no danger. Of course, if you use creatine too much like anything else, then it might some day become a problem. I personally use it with my protein drink and have seen only good results.

As mentioned earlier, our bodies create creatine naturally so the question isn't so much whether creatine itself is harmful but the dosage of creatine that is being used. When it comes to vitamins and supplements, more of a good thing isn't always a good thing. It is possible to consume too much of a vitamin/supplement and this is where the concern lies with creatine for most people.

When taking creatine, it is usually recommended to cycle on and off with your use. Personally, I would avoid using creatine on a daily basis for extended periods of time but am not concerned with the use of creatine when cycled properly.

Of course creatine is not safe. Ok, it is secreted out of urine, but is a artificial substance, so, not safe!

I’ve taken creatine, and the only side effect I noticed was a little extra gassiness. Not pleasant, so I’ve stopped using it. Nice post though. Thanks for sharing.

Personally, I do use creatine. Of course, I try to cycle off of it. I also recommend trying the newr forms of creatine over the monohyrdrate form such as ethyl esther maltate.

I've heard people compare Creatine to Marijuana in the sense that they are both 'gateway' drugs. You start using simple supplements and after a while, you move into the harder ones (be it cocaine or HGH/AS).

Although creatine has recently been accepted as a safe and useful ergogenic aid, several myths have been purported about creatine supplementation which include:

    1. All weight gained during supplementation is due to water retention.

    2. Creatine supplementation causes renal distress.

    3. Creatine supplementation causes cramping, dehydration, and/or altered electrolyte status.

    4. Long-term effects of creatine supplementation are completely unknown.

    5. Newer creatine formulations are more beneficial than creatine monohydrate and cause fewer side effects.

    6. It’s unethical and/or illegal to use creatine supplements. While these myths have been refuted through scientific investigation, the general public is still primarily exposed to the mass media which may or may not have accurate information.

Never taken it but at 145 pounds, 5'7" dont think I haven't been tempted. I know guys who have and had no adverse side effects but I guess I have settled for being lean. I know a 3rd party who said her brother in law had a heart attack due to the stuff...but again that is 3rd party information. Great site with great information here. Thanks!

I took Creatine for a few months during my university days and had some great gains from it. The only side effect I had from it was that I couldn't stop eating after a workout. My grocery bill went through the roof!

Creatine is one of the most well studied sports supplements ever. The bodybuilding and sport supplement industry has a (deserved) shady reputation because very few of the products in this industry have been proven to be safe or effective.I took Creatine for a few months during my university prictale and had some great gains from it.I’ve taken creatine, and the only side effect I noticed was a little extra gassiness.Although creatine has recently been accepted as a safe and useful ergogenic aid, several myths have been purported about creatine supplementation which include:

4. Long-term effects of creatine supplementation are completely unknown.

5. Newer creatine formulations are more beneficial than creatine monohydrate and cause fewer side effects.

6. It’s unethical and/or illegal to use creatine supplements

Here is a creatine tip for all - Never let your creatine sit in liquid for more than a few minutes MAXIMUM. Drink it as soon as you stir it and don't let it settle to the bottom of the glass or around the sides. Think VOLUME.

I have mixed feelings about creatine. I, myself have never used it and never will. I feel that it is harmful to your body. However, I knew a lot of people who used it in high school to get big fast.

The only problem that they mentioned is the fact that as soon as they stopped taking it, they lost all that muscle that they put on with the creatine.

I really just don't think that it is worth it.

Creatine is one of the best yet most effective supplement that delivers real results. Has been around and tested for years, yet to this day it has not been banned. (surprising)

VERY VERY Low dosages are found in some foods, so I see this as a natural supplement that if taken in larger quantities yields pleasing results to the user.

Water retention is great for muscle growth!

We wish you luck to your success!

I used to take Creatine about 2 years ago and never once had any problems with it. It isn't bad for you like some people think it is, I think some may even think that it is a form of steroids.

Creatine comes in many different forms instead of just powder and it definitely does help. It is a great way to aid your muscles so that they heal quicker while increasing size. I noticed a lot more overall strength while I was taking it compared to the years that I had been lifting weights before when I wasn't taking it.

My muscles grew bigger quicker and I was able to recover from a harder work out in far less time.

Any time you mess with Supplements, you can never truly know if they're safe. Usually it's better to just bring in the stuff naturally. It's also cheaper and more effective!

As long as it is taken sensibly then you should be ok. Unfortunately people have a tendency to overdo things like this, and look at it as some kinda short cut to building muscles

i've been thinking about starting with creatine, but i've seen such conflicting information about how to use it; before the work out, after and in some instances, the bottles have recommended both. i've also noticed inconsistency in the dosages that are recommended. does anyone here have a suggestion about a brand and the best way to take it?

I've never really messed with creatine, but more or less stick with whey protein instead. Creatine seemed a bit unnatural to me, kinda like anabolics. Plus, I'd rather have a cut look, not the "I could bench press a car" look.

People have been using creatine for sooo long already, I doubt these new skeptical articles are that grounded in real-life use. It's surely the best supplement for gaining that extra "pump" in the legal realm... don't take that away from us :(

I think if supplements such as Creatine help us then why not use them? There doesn't seem to be any conclusive evidence to say that it's bad.

I haven't actually tried creatine, but I know many athletes who have. The opinions are always mixed, some love it, and highly recommend it - while others are indifferent to it's affects, some are even against it's use entirely.

Thanks for sharing your opinions,

I have also experienced the bulking up effect of creatine so we know it does that much. However after I stopped using it, I felt somewhat bloated so I think the effect has to do with massive water retention like what people used to say about it. It definitely works though.

Creatine is safe if used properly. You need to drink A LOT at least a gallon a day. All bodybuilders know this. If you don't drink a lot, you'll end up with too much salt buildup. My brother and his friend improperly used creatine and didn't drink huge amounts of water. Both ended up getting kidney stones a month apart from each other.

This topic on Creatine is great as there is so many conflicting views on: its legality for use in sport, is it safe?, how do you use it?, and whats best? powder or serum?

Creatine supplements have been around for sometime now, so surely there must be some definitive answer out there

I don’t think that Creatine is worth it. I have never used it and never will. I think that it is injurious to your body. But, I knew lots of people who used it to get big fast. The only problem that they mentioned is the fact that when they stopped taking it, they lost all that muscle that they put on with the creatine.

It should be safe since it is around for so many years. If it is not safe it would be off the shelf long ago.

Creatine, by way of conversion to and from phosphocreatine, functions in all vertebrates and some invertebrates, in conjunction with the enzyme creatine kinase. A similar system based on arginine/phosphoarginine operates in many invertebrates via the action of Arginine Kinase.

Never taken Creatine personally, but I have several friends who have and didn't suffer any longterm effects (that I've heard of). They've all stopped using it however, so who knows what they're not telling me.

I don't bother with creatine because no one seems to know whether it brings about a muscle gain or water gain. I guess people can react differently to creatine. I just don't want to be one of the ones who get bloated with water.

I don't think it causes serious damage. But in my opinion, creatine can be a kind of "gateway drug" for steroids and other more dangerous substances. I don't take any supplements at all.

I know quite a few people who use creatine but I don't really know if they have any more results than anyone else. Other people I know don't use it and to be honest, look much the same. I guess it boils down to personal choice. Often you can feel stronger just by the "thought" of it working and it leads to you working out for longer. Hard to say on an individual basis whether creatine works for everyone.

I can't belive what I'm reading here. Your body does not get addicted to , or dependent on creatine. All the substance does is to superhydrate the muscle. You may get psychologically dependent if you have your head on the wrong way.

the trick is to cycle creatine and keep the majority of any gains you made while using it. The complete explanation is too involved for this post but your body is not dependent on creatine. lol

Actually, Creatine is one of the most researched supplements (second only to whey protein). It is a naturally found substance in meats such as beef, and it is part of the most basic energy cycle in physiology called the Krebs cycle. This is where ATP adenosine tri-phosphate is broken down for its phosphate bonds and then that break down provides the quick momentary energy supply untill the more longterm supply of glycogen can arrive on the scene. And Creatine is the element that is used to rebuild this ATP back up.

So it is a natural componenet of using muscles, and the thought is the more you have the more energy you have for explosive movements - sprinting, weight lifting etc. Plus it makes the muscles swell out nicely because it stores 3 grams of water for each gram of creatine.

I say all of this to reinforce the opinions that this is a safe supplement to use.

I don't know about creatine for muscles, but I'm looking for info on glucosamine. They are using it in the equine industry for arthritis rehab and I was curious about peoples oppinion for humans.

Thanks,

Personally, I prefer trying to stay as natural as possible. I have never used creatine, nor do I plan to in the future, unless there is 100% certainty that it is safe.

I've not heard of any negative side effects from Creatine. I would imagine its fine in moderation.

Absolutely it’s safe. It’s produced naturally in the body, by taking it you are only increasing your natural levels. I never felt any site effects, except it can make your muscle feel soft from all the extra water.

I saw some health drink that contains creatine so I think it is generally regarded as safe but of course, moderation is the key and if you intend to use it in long term, it would be best to consult a medical doctor.

I am the same, I keep away from supplements. Creatin sounds tempting at times but these things need at least 50 years research before I would even go near them...

Supplements are good, but I guess there's also something that we should know about. Perhaps they won't sell it if its harmful to consumers..
