You know, you are absolutely correct. I work in a hospital setting and most of the doctors only want the young thin nurses. It is a shame because most of them lack the intellectual ability that the more experienced-but overweight nurses has.

It's a sad fact but people often do judge others by their appearance. I find myself doing it sometimes even though I know it's wrong. It's the inner person that counts, not the outer one.

Of course, we don’t support any type of discrimination, whether at work or anywhere else. But this is definitely something to consider if you find yourself in an interview or promotion situation. There have also been studies done that show that an athletic/fit looking candidate is often favored over a candidate who isn’t. Fair? Definitely not. But that isn’t the point.

I don't know if its fair or not. In my personal opinion, in an interview for a job, firsdt impressions matter a lot. When an overly obese person walks in, the only thing the interviewer can invariably think is: "this guy cant even be committed to cutting down on his weight. How can I be sure he will be committed to the job".

Whatever the reason, discriminating against any person whatever the case, is unacceptable. Physical appearance should not be the only or primary criteria to assess a person. If you do, you'll lose out on some of the best people in the world.

Being overweight can be detrimental to health as an obese person is much more susceptible to contracting fatal diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart ailments etc. than a normal weight person.... There are various effective diet weight loss programs available and it is to be remembered that before indulging into a diet program for losing weight, the individual must consult thoroughly with medical practitioners to ensure that the weight loss diet he wishes to incorporate is suitable for his body and would not cause any adverse side effect...

here have also been studies done that show that an athletic/fit looking candidate is often favored over a candidate who isn’t. Fair? Definitely not. But that isn’t the point. For your own well-being (health, employment, etc.) there are plenty of reasons to get in shape and be healthy.

Thanks for this article and information..

This is totally true, and you make a good point. Discrimination may be wrong, but that doesn't stop people from doing it. The best option for the individual is to look your best and present your best face to the world, whatever that is. Define yourself as you wish to be, and embody your self respect in the best way you can.

I completely agree we shouldn't discriminate but it does go on. If you are over weight and you work in an sales office and your out representing a company. If your that employer would you want someone over weight meeting your customers or someone that looks sharp and is pleasant to look at.

I think you know the answer and i don't need to say it.

This is a good point, in some cases. However, I've seen other places of work that involved the majority of "workers" being overweight and obese, getting pampered and coddled to the fullest. Yeah, it was discrimination at work alright, for the slim to medium ones. It is called, "do the work for the lazy" or "pick up the slack for the slackers." Just think, I was reading an article a couple months ago that was entitled "Americans are too fat to fight." It was about the Army easing up on the physical fitness requirements and catering to these out-of-shape individuals by altering their training regimen for the potential enlistees. I may have got off subject here, but either way, I find the whole thing to be quite sickening.
Anyway, keep on writing those health related blog posts with perpendicular viewpoints. Cheers!

During the course of my research, I've found that there's two main villains causing overweight and obesity problems among children. They are: poor diets / food choices and a lack of physical activity. Sadly, I've found research that suggests children and preteen adolescents are eating more food away from the home, snacking more habitually on junk food, and drinking more sugar-sweetened beverages. Convenience has become a major theme for our food choices today, thus leading more of us to consume fast food, restaurant meals, or cheap prepackaged meals to prepare in the microwave. Did you know that only 21 percent of young people eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day? (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (2004). Physical activity and good nutrition essential elements to preventing chronic disease and obesity.) Also, nearly half of all vegetable servings consumed by children are fried potatoes (aka french fries!!!) To a large extent, these choices frequently contain substandard nutritional value for the human body. In order to win the war on childhood obesity, families need to cook healthy, fresh, nutritious meals at home, have healthy snacks on hand, and also find fun activities to do as a family like bike riding, hiking, walking, golf, swimming, playing catch, skateboarding, etc. - Anything to stay active and away from the couch.
If you or someone you love needs help for obesity, please contact your physician and make a plan of action to improve your health.

It is a sad commentary on our society that your physical appearance will effect how you are treated, regardless of your talents. It may be challenging, but individuals with this problem should work on building a healthy lifestyle. In due time, positive results will follow.

Well it's no secret to me that fat people get picked on and skinny people have the world by the balls. But I don't know if you can call it descrimination or not.

It's a valid point, I've witnessed it myself in a corporate team-building exercise. The overweight colleagues were 'picked' last, in other words, they were left to the end. Apart from the obvious health issues of being overweight, there are many social problems that are unstated, but present all the same.
I've just written a review on what claims to be the No. 1 Healthy Eating Program in my Am I Obese? website.
It challenges traditional thinking and makes interesting reading.

People often base how much they like someone, subconsciously, on how attractive they find them, even if they think that they don't.
