Favoritism - Are You Guilty?
I think it’s probably safe to say that most of us have a favorite muscle group, whether it’s one that we’ve already developed or one that we would like to develop. For some it might be their abs; for others the arms; for other the chest…. pretty much every muscle group is somebody’s favorite.
Well, the danger of having a group that you call your favorite is that it could lead you to a level of favoritism with that body part. The problem with this is that you are likely to get some unbalanced development. This is not just a bad idea, but can look outright funny!
For example, I remember back when I had first started lifting weights. There was a guy on the pec deck that had very developed pecs, but that was it! He must have spent all of his time doing chest work and nothing else because the rest of his body looked under-developed in comparison. Not just a little different, but obviously a lot of favoritism going on there.
So rather than playing favorites, make sure that you are developing your body in a balanced manner.

I think for many people, it’s easy to get caught up in one muscle group. And if that person gets feedback from other people, they are likely to want to get even better/bigger biceps, pecs, etc… And yes, I agree.. it can look pretty funny if someone gets carried away!
Education Blogger,
Yeah, the peer influence can be a big factor here as well. You start to get attention for that one part and before you know it that’s all you care about.
This is a good point and one of the problems I fell into with “traditional” exercises. Now I am exercising with the CrossFit program which works aggressively to provide a comprehensive workout of all muscle groups, daily.
I’m guilty. Hardly ever train abs, legs, or back. Just arms and chest. Now doctor is warning me of bad posture. Got strong chest muscles and weak back muscles. Great point for you to mention. Im trying to change…but its hard….lol…
What a great piece of information…This is exactly what i’m searching for. Really nice post, and by the way, nice blog. Thanks for sharing.
Developing your body in a balanced manner is good. We must really think about it.
i like this blog thanks for such a great article
Great stuff. I don’t discriminate! I do my best to get an equal opportunity work out. Although I must say biceps and triceps are my favorite!
I never really fell into that trap. I like the feeling more than I like the looks.
It’s so easy for us to look in the mirror and see parts of our body we are not happy with and then set out to “fix” them. While in all honesty I do want to look good at 47 I am much more interested in being able to do daily tasks faster and easier. I am also very interested, as I play sports of different kinds, in doing exercises which are more functional involving multi plane and multi joint activities. At our gym, Crossfit Bainbridge, I have found exactly this type of training and am very happy with it.
