You're right, building mass is tough with resistance bands only. They are good for muscle maintenance however. If you double up the thickest bands, you'd be surprised at how much tension they provide however.

If you want to increase the intensity of your home workout, consider a set of adjustable dumbbells. All I have at home is a set of powerblock dumbbells, and a chin-up and dip station. That's it - and it's plenty to build muscle. All I do is squats, dead-lifts, chin-ups, dumbbell chest presses and bent-over rows.

Bands do have their place, if you cant access a gym or own any free weights then I think they can come in handy.

Bodyweight excersizes are also handy in a similar situation, obviously nothing can substitute free weights but they can be quite effective for maintaining strength and mass for short periods of time.

I agree it is good to have a backup plan when we can`t exercise at the gym ,bands are good a milk jug filled with water, etc are great ways to keep you active and toned but nothing beats a good workout at the gym.

Resistance bands are ok although you're unlikely to put much mass using them. Why don't you try bodyweight exercises too. It is possible to train your whole body using nothing but your own weight- that won't make you really big but you can get very tough this way. There are brutal bodyweight exercises out there just waiting for you to find them... give it a try:)

Hi Dan,

Resistance bands are great for toning, regulating and lengthening muscle. This is why women prefer them to men. If you want to bulk up, resistance bands will not be the right choice. Resistance bands are not made for this and therefore should be used for regular light workouts.

Thanks,

Sarah.

I was always terrified to use the bands during weights - with my luck and bad coordination, I just knew it would come flying up and hit me in the face! I agree that they are good to keep your muscles in shape and to switch your routine up, but they don't do anything as far as gaining muscle.

I love resistance bands for traveling and mobility in general. I bring them with me anytime I travel. And if I want to workout outside, they come in handy. Or, say I'm at my son's soccer practice... ather than sitting there, I jog around the field, and bring my "rubber bands" for resistance training.

Comment #2 was about what I was going to say. I'm in the same boat. All I have is a pair of 40lb. dumbbells and a Power Tower (pull-up, push-up, leg lift & dip station) and that is a plenty to build muscle & strength. However, to put on a lot of mass, one would need the big bulky gym equipment.

Man, there is a lot of good stuff on this blog. I may have to drop back by later on, for some more reading.

While I do agree with some of the above posters that I like weights much better than the bands, the bands are certainly a convenient substitute when traveling and beat the alternative of not working out. They still give you a decent workout without taking up much space. Though, I will admit they are more difficult to use for some exercises if you are really tall.

I understand that coming from free weights and/or using a weight bench can be hard, but a lot of these circuit training devices and equipment that doesn't involve dead weights, can actually provide a lot of health benefits and muscular gains - without taking up hardly any space! Personally, I favor the Power Tower when it comes to upper body fitness, but many of these items prove to be beneficial, as well. At any rate, good luck with your physical fitness goals; cheers! ;)

Seems like a neat idea, especially if you can do it in your own time at home. Personally I have a gym membership but I also have a couple of 10kg weights that I regularly use if I'm not feeling like heading out of the house.

I've never been skeptical about these bands, I don't really try to be buff, just keep my muscles "awake" so to speak, and these are great for that.

Using resistance bands are great, i supplement them with dumbbells but now they are part of my life. Traing with resistance bands anywhere as they are so portable. I purchased them from www.suspensiontrainer.co.uk

Nice article and great reminder. I have a set of bands I use as well. The black band is the strongest. I use it for some ab work where you stick it in the top of the door, hold in your hands(by your head) and pull down with your abs. Doesn't seem like a little band would work when you're used to working out with heavy weights, but you'd be surprised. Definitely give it a try.

I beloved as much as you’ll obtain performed proper here. I’ve had a tough time clearing my mind in getting my thoughts out. I do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are lost simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or hints? Kudos!

Hay! Resistance bands are great to work your body out! They have helped me to develop chest, shoulders, biceps, etc. Of course you must replace them after some time, but they are very much cheapr than other exercise aids.
