Can You Get a Good Workout at Home?

home gym by bmof, flickr.comI think this is a common question out there. I’m not sure who started it, but I think we have all heard that you can’t get as good of a workout at home as you can at the gym. In some senses, I completely agree with this statement. The gym will usually give you a better variety of exercises, and you don’t have to worry about making space for all that equipment in your basement!

With that being said, there are also ways that you can still get a great workout at home. One big benefit to working out at home is convenience. If you live 20 minutes from the gym you may find it hard motivating yourself to go. But if you can walk downstairs and get your workout, that makes it a lot easier. But don’t let that convenience make you lazy in doing it ;-)!

I read a really good article from Sean Nalewanyi today about this exact topic. Rather than me just going over the same points, here is a link to his article so you can read it for yourself: Muscle-Building Success From Home: Can It Be Done?

I agree that you can have a good workout at home. My wife and I created this home gym and we have fun exercising every morning.

Totally, I think the answer is yes. The issue for me is space. I actually live in an apartment and have an entire room taken up by my weight bench. Ughh…looking forward to a garage…

    technogeek,
Yeah, space can be one of the most limiting parts of working out at home. That’s one reason why I still think going to the gym is great, but there is still plenty that you can do at home. I hope you get a garage sooner rather than later!

I workout at home too and find I get just as good a workout as going to the gym. I find that it takes a bit more motivation and dedication to actually exercise at home tho.

I think it takes a lot of will power and structure to your day to work out at home…since I’m working at home I can workout all throughout the day. Doing curls in between online work helps wake you up and make you more productive, not to mention ripped up.

I don’t workout at all; why ? I just don’t need it :D, but if I’ll workout I’ll do it in a gim, I just don’t have space at home for workout.

Yes, you can get good workout also at home. Just buy barbells and a bench and you can train every muscles in your body. This is cheap and espacially good for those living far away from a gym.

If I had a small gym at home, I would diffinately use it. The most often reason for why I don’t go to the gym, is the transport. So if I had a gym at home, it would be easy just to take a 20 minutes session, then go doing something else in the house, and then come back for another 20 minutes session. I could repeat that many times, as I have breaks. Not like the town gym where you come - excercise - and go home again.

Love the tips from that article. I am going to have to try them now that I don’t have time to go to the gym anymore.

I agree with your post, you can definitely get a good workout at home. I do and I don’t even use any equipment whatsoever. The gym however can be good to get you motivated and get you in the right mindset to work out.

I think it’s hard to do that at home. The best way is doing that at Jam house.

I also think that you need a professional professional trainer to get the proper result

  26. June 16th, 2010 | 3:29 pm

I disagree with the commenter above me. There are plenty of detailed videos online that can teach people proper form for the basic exercises.

I think you can definately get a good workout at home. I live in a remote area and don’t have a car, so to catch the bus every day to go to the gym isnot an option. I have a collection of exercise Dvds which I use 3 or 4 times a week. I have a set of 3kg handweights to use during the routines and I also use a chair for tricep dips. I have used several exercise Dvds and prefer my Davina Dvd. I also quite like the 10 minute soloution dvds which let you build your own workout, so you can change it round each time.

I’ve always been a big supporter of working out at home. It saves money and travel time to and from the gym. If you’re creative, you can do everything in a gym at home.

  32. January 9th, 2011 | 10:13 pm

I agree 100%. If you get into a routine, you feel bad if you miss it even one day. Force yourself for at least a month, and you have formed a habit. It’s the best.

  33. January 31st, 2011 | 1:44 am

I completely agree with all those who say that you can have a great workout at home. I was forced into this situation recently when I moved to a VERY hot part of the world and was not able to get out for a run too often. I was forced to go out and buy some home gym equipment for myself and managed to exercise quite well from home. As a result, I researched a lot of home gym equipment and put some reviews together here that you can read at http://www.expert-treadmillreviews.com/horizon_t101.php.

working out at home is much more convenient for some, especially if weightlifting or more vigorous exercise as you can take time out between sets and if at home do other things, i work from home and often workout at the same time, disadvantage would be nobody else at home to spot for you, wide range of training information as well as supplement information can be found at http://jaymeds.com

I started using a home gym because I got tired of paying the the high monthly membership dues at the gym. I also started using a home gym because I hated it when I would go to the gym and have to wait in line to get to use a machine. I could never get a really good workout in.

I’m a firm believer you can get a great workout at home. There are pros and cons to home vs the gym, but for busy schedules, you can’t beat the home gym every now and then.
